A.I. Writes Essays, But What About Earth's Future?

How AI-powered bots like ChatGPT are helping students write college essays, and the ethical implications considering their environmental impact.

In the turmoil of college applications, Earth's greatest nemesis is not forgotten. The young generation turns towards A.I. chatbots like ChatGPT and Bard — tools that might assist, but also kindle the spark of a warming planet.

Consider the sustainability of using these bots: the massive data centers required to generate even short responses, powered largely by fossil fuels. Unbeknownst to Harvard, Yale, Princeton's applicants, their draft essays come at an unseen environmental cost.

Colleges remain oblivious to the ticking climate time bomb we're handing our future citizens. It’s high time the class of 2028 wakes up. As an answer to Princeton's "What song represents the soundtrack of your life?" question, I asked ChatGPT to suggest a tune reflecting our current environment plight.

The response, however, was disappointing. ChatGPT suggested "Cake by the Ocean," missing the mark widely. Perhaps AI, in its current state, isn't sophisticated enough to grasp our urgent need for environmental consciousness.

Shouldn't our soundtrack rather be "Nameless, Faceless," Courtney Barnett's grunge-pop anthem? Powerful words encompassing the plight of a generation facing nameless, faceless challenges —the ghosts of past generations' environmental neglect. Our story is not sex on the beach, it's climate change warnings on repeat whilst we rally together to face our nameless, faceless future.
