New Surface Pro: $500 More Than Last Year, Still No Keyboard in the Box

Microsoft's new Surface Pro tablet costs $1,499, up from $999. The keyboard is still sold separately. I went to the launch. The coffee was also extra.

Microsoft has announced the new Surface Pro, its detachable tablet-laptop thing, at $1,499. Last year's was $999. The keyboard is still sold separately.

Five hundred extra dollars and you still cannot type on it. I respect the consistency. A lesser company would have caved and tossed in a keyboard out of shame. Microsoft has no shame, which is, frankly, a competitive advantage.

The spec sheet mentions a faster chip. I am told it makes spreadsheets open quicker, which sounds about as fun as it gets at my desk most weeks.

The keyboard is $179. The pen is more. The charger, I assume, will be a subscription by next March.

I won't be covering the follow-up. Someone else can price the mouse.
